YOU ARE AT: HOME > DIGITIZING IMAGES
In my dad's bedroom closet there are two boxes of 35mm Kodachrome slides. Most of these images were
taken in countries around the Mediterranean Sea while he was serving in the U.S. Navy in the early 1950's.
There are a lot of people like my father who have slides with irreplaceable images that they would like to
safeguard and pass on to family and friends.
IMAGES BY GEORGE HAS THE ABILITY TO TAKE THESE PRICELESS TRANSPARENCIES
AND SAFELY TRANSFER THEM TO A CD ROM IN THE SAFETY OF YOUR HOME OR PLACE OF BUSINESS.
Personally I would have a difficult time sending my dad's slides to a photo lab in Timbuktu and trusting that
they will make it back safely to my home. All it would take would be one mistake with the shipper or lab and those
priceless memories would be gone forever.
There are some good reasons to digitize your slides and store them on a CD.
* GIFTS FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
* ARCHIVE SLIDE COLLECTIONS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
* DISPLAY ON A COMPUTER SCREEN / LCD PROJECTOR

George uses a Nikon Coolscan III professional slide scanner and Vuescan imaging software. This will provide a
much better image than the typical home flat bed scanner. At full resolution, this device can scan an image and
convert it to a 25 megabyte .tif file of up to 2,700 dots per inch (dpi), or 2,404 x 3,698 pixels.
IT
CAN GIVE YOU A VERY DETAILED SCAN.
In other words,
Below is some information from a published chart of recommended pixel dimensions for
best quality print results.
PRINT SIZE |
PIXEL DIMENSIONS MINIMUM |
PIXEL DIMENSIONS MAXIMUM |
4" X 6" |
600 x 900 |
1,200 x 1,800 |
5" X 7" |
750 x 1,050
|
1,500 x 2,100 |
8" X 10" |
1,200 x 1,500 |
2,400 x 3,000 |
10" X 13" |
1,500 x 1,950 |
3,000 x 3,900 |
10" X 15" |
1,500 x 2,250 |
3,000 x 4,500 |
This means that from a 2,700 dpi scan ( 2,404 x 3,698), you could have a detailed 10" x 15" print
made from your CD.
I recommend scanning at 1,350 dp1 (1,202 x 1,849) for most applications. This will provide a quality print in
sizes 4"
X 6", 5" X 7", and 8" X 10".
I will not use any cleaners or solvents on your slides. They will only be dusted with a camel hair brush to remove any
surface particles.
Images are burned on a CDR.
For your information, most of my portfolio pictures ( A SAMPLE OF IMAGES) are scanned from slides.

George stores all digitized images in uncompressed .tif (tagged information format), which is the industry standard.
This will ensure that no data is lost through compression and that your image will keep all of its scanned detail.
The characteristics of .tif are as follows:
UNCOMPRESSED FILE
HIGHEST QUALITY
BEST FOR USE IN EDITING
BEST FOR PRINTING
UNIVERSAL SUPPORT IN APPLICATIONS AND COMPUTER PLATFORMS.
If requested, the file can also be copied in .jpg (joint photographic experts group) format both at full resolution and
reduced for web use at no additional charge.
The characteristics of .jpg are as follows:
COMPRESSED FILE

SMALLER FILE SIZES
EDITING AND SAVING EACH OPERATION DETERIORATES THE IMAGE (NOT GOOD !!)
